Data Sources

Scam Type Distribution (NASC 2025)

  • Investment scams: $837.7M (38.4% of total)
  • Payment redirection: $166.8M (7.7%)
  • Romance scams: $139.9M (6.4%)
  • Phishing: $97.6M (4.5%)
  • Remote access: $69.9M (3.2%)
  • Other: $868.1M (39.8%)

Calculation Assumptions

  • Average reimbursement: adjustable per-claim amount, defaulting to the A$3,000 auto-comp benchmark proposed by Treasury under the SPF
  • Gross exposure: retail customers × scam attempt rate × average reimbursement
  • YoY growth: 7.8%, derived from NASC reported losses increasing from $2.03B (2024) to $2.18B (2025)
  • Default values: Customer counts and attempt rates are illustrative estimates based on publicly available data
  • Prevention rate: 60-70% is Apate's estimated prevention capability based on deployment experience

Important Notes

  • This calculator models auto-comp exposure only. Total SPF liability includes AFCA external dispute resolution (claims >A$3,000), regulatory penalties (up to A$50M), and operational compliance costs.
  • The A$3,000 auto-comp is a Treasury proposal as of May 2026. Final thresholds may differ.
  • Actual scam attempt rates vary significantly by institution. Use your own data where available.
  • Penalty risk (A$10-50M) is shown as a static range and is not factored into the calculated totals.
